During the recent FPHC Conference, held at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, a Letter of Intent was signed by the FPHC Chair, Dr Pam Hardy and Dr Peter Patel, Chair of Saving Lives International (SLI). The Letter of Intent reflects a formalisation of 5 years' cooperation between the 2 organisations which has primarily been through the delivery of the FPHC Pre-Hospital Trauma Care Course in India and Nepal. Over 100 Providers have been trained and a carefully selected number of those have gone on to complete an Instructor Course and have subsequently delivered courses at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research. The Letter of Intent expresses a commitment to ongoing cooperation and partnership between the two organisations with the intention of it maturing into a Memorandum of Agreement over the next year.
SLI is a charity aimed at improving health outcomes following disasters and primarily works in India and Nepal. It focuses on advancing disaster medicine preparedness and response through case reviews, education and training. Pre-Hospital Care forms a small, but significant element, of SLI's wider disaster medicine programme and has the added benefit of having a role in everyday emergency responses. There were >180,000 road deaths in India in 2024, equating to 1 death every 3 minutes, and accompanying high rates of morbidity with an immense personal and economic impact. SLI has evolved over the last 30 years as a result of humanitarian work and post-disaster recovery programmes developed by its Chair, Dr Peter Patel in partnership with local health systems and other international organisations.
The charity has done incredible work to improve education and disaster preparedness in India and Nepal, and the FPHC is proud to support them in their endeavours.
