Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care STG Elective Programme
The Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care are delighted to again be offering the opportunity for Medical Students to undertake elective placements immersed within the field of Pre-Hospital Care.
Welcome to the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care (FPHC) Student Elective Programme. This programme is designed to provide Medical Students with unique opportunities to gain hands-on experience in Pre-Hospital Care settings. Whether you’re looking to enhance your skills, broaden your knowledge, or explore a potential career path, our elective programme offers a truly unique opportunity.
The application process opens in August and will be advertised on the FPHC and Student & Trainee Group (STG) social media channels as well as the FPHC website.
Unfortunately, we are unable to offer assistance with organising electives outside of our own programme as this would be conflicting with our application process. Elective applicants undergo a rigorous application and interviewing process to receive the placements we offer; therefore, we can’t assist with facilitating extra placements beyond these.

The Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care has arranged with The Air Ambulance Service (TAAS), the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust (EHAAT) and Magpas Air Ambulance for successful Medical Student applicants to spend a 4-week elective placement experiencing a HEMS-based PHEM system. Elective activities might include involvement in training and simulation with crews, observer shifts, audit or project work, attending governance meetings and more.
The Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care has arranged with The Welsh Ambulance Service (WAS) and London Ambulance Service (LAS) for successful Medical Student applicants to spend a 4- to 6-week elective placement experiencing different aspects of PHEM delivery. Opportunities might include observer shifts with ambulance crews and specialist paramedics, time with the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), experience of operational management and control centre experience, and more.
The Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care is pleased to offer a £250 bursary for one UK-based Medical Student undertaking a pre-hospital themed elective internationally. Applications for the bursary run alongside applications for the FPHC STG Elective Programme.
To apply for the bursary, please complete the following application form and email to FPHC@rcsed.ac.uk by the closing date of Monday 28th September 2026 at 17:00. Applicants will be informed if they have been successful in securing the bursary by Monday 16th November.

The recipient of the bursary will be required to submit a short report upon completion of their elective placement which will be published on our website and social media platforms.
