Faculty Accreditation is a unique opportunity for paramedics, nurses and doctors who are unable to undertake Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) sub-specialist training, or not eligible to have the sub-specialty added to their professional registration, to be formally acknowledged and recognised as operating at a level equivalent to a Consultant practitioner. By Consultant, we mean an individual working at Level 8 of the UK Sector Skills Council for Health Career Framework.
When the GMC formally recognised PHEM as a sub-specialty of the medical specialties of Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine in 2012, it was recognised that there needed to be a pathway for accreditation, or recognition of equivalence, for existing practitioners unable to access PHEM sub-specialty training. The Faculty, together with the Intercollegiate Board for Training in Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine (IBTPHEM), developed processes to enable this. As PHEM has matured, there was a need to update the regulations to reflect the evolution of the PHEM curriculum, FIMC examination regulations and the multi-specialty and multi-professional landscape of PHEM.
Over the past few months, the FPHC and IBTPHEM have undertaken a detailed review of the historical Faculty Accreditation regulations and have been able to align them with current updated FIMC eligibility requirements. As with the previous regulations, applicants need to hold the FIMC and then provide objective documentary evidence that their clinical practice is at the Consultant level.
The main differences in the new regulations are that the burden of evidence required post-FIMC has been reduced. Applicants must still provide a validated portfolio, but the post-FIMC experience is now four years of PHEM practice and the range and depth of evidence required has been reduced. We believe these reductions are proportionate, reflect the status and achievement of FIMC by examination and maintain equitable access and consistent standards across all specialty and professional groups.

For applications using the existing regulations (25.02.2020) the deadline for submission is 5pm on 31st December 2024.
