A new paper by the FPHC Wellbeing Group sets out practical guidance for employers to support staff through pregnancy, parental leave and the return to work. This paper addresses previous evidence that unclear or absent maternity and parental leave policies are a significant workplace stressor for staff. The paper cites earlier FPHC survey data from more than 250 people: 17% said their pre-hospital organisation did not have a pregnancy policy, while a further 30% did not know whether one existed. Its recommendations draw on focus groups and professional input from across ambulance, air ambulance and voluntary services.
This paper provides a structured framework for every pre-hospital organisation to develop their own clear maternity and parental-leave policies. Moreover, it supports regular, individualised risk assessments that balance safety with each employee’s preferences. The guidance recommends reasonable adjustments to operational duties, meaningful alternative roles without career detriment, personalised return-to-work programmes and support following pregnancy loss. Readers are encouraged to explore the full paper for the detailed framework and suggested policy structure; a copy can be requested from corresponding author Dr Sarah Morton at sarah.morton@doctors.org.uk.
