Dr Fionna Moore, FPHC Doctor Co-Vice Chair, spoke at the Nepal Disaster Medicine and Management International Conference (NEDMMICON) held in Kathmandu on 16 – 17 February 2024. She dovetailed this invitation with the subsequent delivery of an FPHC Pre-Hospital Trauma Care (PHTC) Course on 19 – 20 February. The FPHC presence in Nepal was part of ongoing cooperation with the charity Saving Lives International with whom we had previously delivered Provider and Instructor PHTC Courses in Chennai, India. NEDMMICON focused on ‘Shared Solutions for Disaster Medicine and Management’ and Fionna spoke about the role of pre-hospital care in disasters as well as chairing discussions. The event was attended by the Minister for Health and Population from the Government of Nepal as well as other senior personnel including the UK Ambassador to Nepal and the Nepal Ambassador to the UK.

As part of early discussions with the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries (WSoA) to explore areas of common interest with the FPHC where we may be able to cooperate for mutual benefit, the conference was also attended by Professor David Ross (Dean of the WSoA) and Dr Christina Dale (Immediate Past President of the Faculty of Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine). David spoke about the World Perspective of Disaster Medicine and Public Health and Disaster Medicine in the UK as well as chairing a number of sessions and workshops. Christina, who was on the faculty of the subsequent PHTC Course, joined Fionna in describing the role of pre-hospital care in disasters and also spoke about disaster medicine in more developed nations.

The event was a great success and reportedly featured on local news programmes. It was particularly pleasing that the event was largely organised by Dr Ramesh Maharjan from Kathmandu who was one of the first candidates on our PHTC Courses held in S Asia and is now an Instructor. This is hopefully a first, but significant, step in establishing more FPHC pre-hospital care training in Nepal and working with colleagues from the WSoA and in Nepal.
