Earlier this year, the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care welcomed medical student Joseph Herbert all the way from Australia. By happy coincidence, Joe was placed in the North of Scotland for his elective, where Dr Pam Hardy, FPHC Chair is based.
Joe’s experience in Scotland will help to shape his career in pre-hospital care. Scotland’s diverse landscapes, ranging from urban areas to remote rural settings, provided Joe with a wide range of potential scenarios. This variety will help develop a robust skill set, essential for pre-hospital care, which focuses on providing critical care to patients before they reach hospital.
Additionally, Scotland’s well-established services and training programs have supported Joe in gaining a range of experience. The collaborative environment and opportunities he accessed provided hands-on training with air ambulances and emergency response teams, which are crucial for professional growth and development.
We are pleased to share Joe’s reflections on his UK-based elective placement and wish him all the best for his future in pre-hospital care.
