A brief review on BS8848: 2014 and its relevance to new or inexperienced expedition ‘medics’

Although current circumstances have put most expeditions and adventures on hold, many of us will be itching to head back out when safe to do so. Expedition medicine continues to grow and develop as a subspecialty and the FPHC Updated Guidance for Medical Provision for Wilderness Medicine may have helped in formalizing the practice and highlighting key skills medics should have. However, it is also important for UK based medics to be aware of the legal framework they will operate in on expeditions and what existing guidance there is.

British Standard 8848: 2014 sets out good practice for a wide range of overseas adventurous activities covering all aspects from initial planning to safe return home. This article has reviewed the guidance and focused on aspects related to the ‘medic’ to assist in ensuring your own trips meet this high standard.
